Blessing of the Fleet 2008,and We Were There!
Sea BreezesThe fleet has been blessed, and we were there sitting dockside to enjoy it. My fellow teacher, Lavinnia, came to breakfast at our house Sunday morning and went to church with us. We walked from church to the river and watched the Blessing of the Fleet. Each shrimp boat came up to the dock and made a u-turn, putting her big diesel engines in reverse to keep from sliding upriver into the bridge as the tidal current is so strong. The boats were introduced over the sound system, then sprinkled with holy water and a prayer was said naming that boat and asking God for a bountiful harvest, safety on the seas and calm waters. Our own priest, Father Ted, was one of the officiants. The boats were beautiful and quite a sight to behold. They were all flying colorful flags and sporting lots of adornments. We topped the day off with a basket of fried sweet Georgia shrimp. Yum! Enjoy the pictures Harold took to capture the 2008 Blessing of the Fleet in Darien, Georgia.
